So-What are harmonics and why be concerned about them? How are harmonics reduced or eliminated? What are the new technologies in this area? How do we address the harmonic issue in specifications? What should be done about harmonics at the jobsite after installation? These are just some of the questions that our speaker, Ron Ray, will deal with.

Ron is with Ronald Ray & Associates, Inc, who are Territorial Managers for ABB.

Ron is an Indiana native and a Purdue grad. He brings a wealth of knowledge not only in the proper application of AC & DC drives and motors, but also in solving problems associated with this type of equipment.  Ron has spoken at several ASHRAE chapter meetings in addition to various other associations.

We can be sure of an entertaining and educational program.

PRESIDENTS MESSAGEThe first meeting of the 2007 calendar year was a lunch meeting on combined heating and power systems.  Josh Isom and Willis McCullough of UTC Power discussed current fuel cell and micro-turbine technologies as well as the current utility infrastructure and how it makes attractive these types of systems.  The presentation also addressed the viability of these systems in the marketplace across the country and here in the Midwest.  Consistent with ASHRAE's sustainability theme, these systems are both efficient and environmentally responsible.
ASHRAE ENERGY/TECHNICAL AWARDSA circus big top, a school using 80 percent less energy than typical, and a Chicago sustainability education center were recognized for innovative design by ASHRAE during the 2006 Winter Meeting.  These are the type of projects that can be submitted for an ASHRAE Technical Award.  Already in CIC, we have one strong entry and another one promised.  These entries will be submitted to Regional competition in May of 2007.  The awards recognize outstanding achievements by members who have successfully applied innovative building design in the areas of occupant comfort, indoor air quality (IAQ) and energy conservation. Their designs incorporate ASHRAE standards for effective energy management and IAQ.

If you have a project you would like to discuss, or would like help filling out the short form application, contact Steve Ehrman at Stephen.g.ehrman@jci.com

As always, suggestions and comments are appreciated and should be forwarded to Kent Koch at kent.koch@carrier.utc.com.
