Meeting Program:

Our March speaker is Mr. Lee Burgett, P.E., the current president of ASHRAE, who will talk to us on the future goals and responsibilities of ASHRAE as he sees them.

To quote Mr. Burgett:

"The Chinese have a proverb, "when you drink the water, remember the spring."  Everyone in our industry drinks the water of ASHRAE's technology every day.
ASHRAE is a unique technical organization.  We come together as professionals in our fields not simply to promote our own development and success, but to promote a public good that benefits society as a whole.  We do it by developing and promoting technology, enhancing productivity, improving health and safety in the built environment, and setting professional standards that are a model of excellence around the world.*        Promote energy conservation.

*         Develop economically viable applications of renewable energy.

*         Increase workplace productivity, IAQ.

*         Develop methods that allow designers to accurately and confidently model a building in virtual reality, anywhere in the world in no more than one week's time by 2010.

The proposed plan contains some innovative and aggressive goals.  "The task now is to execute the plan as quickly as possible. And, ASHRAE must proactively reach out to other organizations that share these goals and are willing to collaborate."

Mr. Burgett will talk to us on these issues and the role that ASHRAE can play.

He is active in a number of industry organizations, including the U.S. Green Building Council, the Canadian Standards Association, Underwriters Laboratories Inc., the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Mr. Burgett completed his secondary education at East Grand Rapids (Michigan) in 1957, received his bachelor of science in 1961 and his master of science in mechanical engineering in 1962 from Michigan State University and his master's in business administration from the University of Wisconsin in 1972.

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
We had great attendance on Valentine's Day for our program on web-based specifications.  I hope you felt the presentation was as informative and useful as I did.

Also, applications are available for the Regional Energy Award competition.  This is an opportunity for you to highlight one of your projects, and get some recognition for yourself and your firm.  The application is simple to complete, and if you win in the Region, you can submit your project on a national basis.  If you are interested, and did not receive an application, please contact one of the chapter officers or board members and we will get the information to you.

Our March meeting is your opportunity to talk directly to the head honcho at ASHRAE.  The Society President does not have time in a year to visit every chapter in the world, so we only get this chance once in a while.  Some of our members have seen Lee Burgett speak before and based on their review, I think you will enjoy his talk and learn a lot about ASHRAE in the process.  We'll look forward to seeing you there!

After March, we only have two more meetings.  On April 11th, we have another lunchtime meeting where Jeff Kaden from Indiana University will update us on their success using commissioning.  Spouse night is May 16th at the Indians baseball game.  Put these meetings on your calendar now.  Also, if you have ideas for programs for next year, you can start to send them to a chapter officer or board member as we will begin discussing programs for the 2006/2007 season soon.

RESEARCH PROMOTION UPDATEThe Research Promotion committee will be hosting a Silent Auction at the upcoming April 11th membership meeting.  Come early and bid often, 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Research Promotion.
