Meeting Program:
Energy Considerations in Engineering Design:
The Ethic and The Reality

Our presenter for October is one of the ASHRAE distinguished lecturers, Mr.William. J. Coad. Mr. Coads presentation will start with a historical review of the past 200 years, exploring how the development of the science of thermodynamics combined with that of energy extraction and refinement, have enabled mankind to achieve a quality of life and the economy necessary to support it that cannot be sustained.  Through a discussion of engineering professionalism Mr. Coad will develop the concept that it is only through embracing our stewardship of world energy resources as an ethic, that the engineering community can lead the way to a solution.  In the closing portion of the program, "The Reality", four simple examples are presented that can be put into practice immediately in engineering design.
Mr. Coad is president of Coad Engineering Enterprises in St. Louis, Missouri.  An engineering graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, he served as an instructor and affiliate professor of engineering for 29 years, was with McClure Engineering Associates for 40 years where he served at many levels of engineering and management including Chairman of the Board and CEO.  Bill is a registered professional engineer in 37 states, was the president of ASHRAE in 2001-2002 and has served extensively on ASHRAE committees and councils.
He has received numerous awards for his engineering achievements including ASHRAE Fellow, Louise and Bill Holliday distinguished Fellow Award, the F. Paul Anderson Award, the Donald Julius Groen Prize of the British Institute of Mechanical Engineers and the Alumni Achievement Award of Washington University.
Mr. Coad has published numerous papers, magazine articles and authored and co-authored several books and educational texts.

ASHRAE IAQ 2007 Examines Healthy, Sustainable Buildings

Guidance on how to do so will be presented at the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers' (ASHRAE) conference, IAQ 2007 Healthy and Sustainable Buildings, which will be held Oct. 15-17, 2007, at Baltimore's Inner Harbor, Baltimore, Maryland.

"The issues of healthy and sustainable buildings are cyclical and interdependent," Lawrence J. Schoen, P.E., chair of the conference said. "Buildings not only impact the indoor environment but they have an impact on the outside environment. Our goal in creating healthy buildings should be to create indoor environments where people are healthy and productive but that minimize impact on the environment."
