This talk presents a new perspective on the topic, starting with the fundamental dynamics of psychometric instability and its affect upon the controlled environment. Against this background, the evolution of VAV system technology and its capability of addressing the results of this instability are discussed. System directed solutions will be presented which will reflect a significant departure from existing design practices. The speaker is William J. Coad, ASHRAE President Elect, an ASHRAE, distinguished lecturer, and a principal and immediate past chairman of McClure Engineering Associates, a leading consulting engineering firm in St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. Coad has over forty years experience in the design, installation and operation of HVAC systems and for twenty-nine years was an affiliate professor of mechanical engineering at Washington University in St. Louis. He has published numerous articles, papers and books on various aspects of HVAC systems, is a co-author and lecturer of the ASHRAE Professional Design Seminar on air system design, and has received numerous awards for his achievements in advancing the sciences of Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning including ASHRAE’s highest award for technical achievement, the F.
