BIM: Building Information Modeling. An Overview, Presented by Eric Bogenschutz
BIM will be discussed as a holistic design and construction process that portrays the use of technology as a communication tool. BIM isn’t just specific software, but it is a process and a concept of completing projects. BIM can be anything that you want it to be, but there are some common items that will be presented during our presentations. Such as:
- Energy Simulations and Analysis
- Cost Modeling
- Clash Detection
- Visualization
- Contractual Obligations and Deliverables
Meeting Program:
Building Information Modeling (BIM) has become more prevalent in recent years as a design tool to deliver building projects. What is BIM? How does BIM affect the project delivery in both design and construction phases? What benefit does the Owner receive when a ‘record model’ is delivered? CIC ASHRAE has assembled a group of five (5) panelists; an Owner, an Engineer, an Architect, a Contractor and a Vendor; who will be responding to questions and discussing how BIM is affecting our industry. The panelists include Theresa Thompson (Indiana University – Bloomington), Andre Maue (L’Acquis Engineering), Anson Keller (Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf), Joseph Lansdell (Poynter Sheetmetal) and Brian Lohman (Trane). We’ll start off the conversation with a list of pre-selected questions to get the discussion rolling, and will field any questions that that we haven’t covered from the audience has towards the end of the meeting.

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
Thanks to Tom Durkin and IPS for successful meeting in January. It was great to see the design up close for the ASHRAE technology award winner for 2009, IPS school #87 designed by Tom Durkin. If you would like to submit a project for a technology award contact our Central Indiana Chapter (CIC) ASHRAE Chapter Technology Transfer Committee (CTTC) Chair, Brooke Enochs, benochs@m-n-a.com. The project will need to be in operation to achieve actual energy use information and submittals are due by the end of February. There are chapter awards, regional awards and national awards available. Our meeting in February should be another great one as we get a chance to learn about BIM from several people with real life experience. This is a rare opportunity to learn about new technology that is reshaping how we go about designing and constructing buildings. At this meeting we will also have a special celebration of our 50th anniversary and honor our past presidents. You don’t want to miss this one!Welcome New CIC ASHRAE Student Activities Co-Chairs:We have a new student activities chair actually two of them. They are Chris Watkins with JCI and Seth Whitesel with Trane who will co-chair the student activities committee. Thank you to outgoing chair Abby Lillianfeld for her many years of distinguished service. Chris and Seth have some big shoes to fill. Chris and Seth will start by beginning the scholarship selection process. The informational flyer should be out by the end of January with applications due by the end of February.
